Summit Maternity Care Center
Postpartum Care

After all the hard work of labor is done, it is a time for the season of receiving. Receiving the joy that comes with family and baby bonding, receiving the time to heal, and receiving the love from community

We believe natural child birth is an option that supports finding oneself that results in a stronger bond with her child and her family, providing a sense of fulfillment and restoration.

Meeting Your Baby:

Bonding is one of the most sacred transitions between mother and baby.  Our team respects your time to bond and nurture the new baby in the family.  Each family is given the opportunity to spend time together without separation.  During the first few hours mom and baby are closely monitored for continued health and wellness, all infant assessments are done while mom or family holds the baby.  After you and your baby have nursed, we will do a full physical examination of your baby right on the bed next to you.

Your first postpartum will be 24-48 hours after the birth of your baby. Your visit will consist of:

  • Processing of birth certificate and social security card

  • Physical exam for mother and baby

  • Metabolic Screening (PKU)

  • Critical Congenital Heart Defect Screening (CCHD)

Over the 6-8 weeks following your baby’s birth we will:

  • Discuss your birth experience

  • Hearing screening

  • Provide you with family planning options

  • Provide postpartum support, counsel, and care

  • Offer breastfeeding support

  • Infant weight checks

By Florida state law, you will need to connect with your chosen pediatrician within 72 hours of the birth to make the first appointment for your baby, which can be scheduled at your convenience. We will contact your pediatrician and share your records with them for continued care of your baby. Options for immunizations an be discussed and reviewed with your pediatrician. Vitamin K and erythromycin eye ointment are available for your baby if you so choose.
